Things To Consider When Hiring a Marquee

About Skye Marquees

If you are planning on hiring a marquee for a wedding or thinking of holding a corporate event or party, then you have come to the right place. A beautiful white marquee for any wedding will really add a wow factor and create a unique talking point for any other kind of celebration.

There are a few things we get asked quite frequently when we get the initial call about our services and what exactly it entails when you hire a marquee. So, we thought we’d answer a few of them right here…

Do I need a license when I hire a marquee?

In general no, you won’t need a license. However, there are a few factors that could change this. If you are having music, which undoubtedly you will be, then many sites will say that you need to get a license. However, this is only the case if you are looking to profit from the music on offer. For example, if you are selling tickets. So, for a wedding or event you will be OK.

Live-Band-in-a-MarqueeThe only other factor that may require a license is if you are planning on selling alcohol from the marquee. If you are offering a free bar (lucky guests!), then you are fine without a licence but if cash sales are occurring then you will need to either check that the people running the bar are licensed or apply for one with your local council.

How do I provide power to a marquee?

There are a couple of options when it comes to providing power in a marquee. In general, the best solution would be to hire a generator with enough juice to power lighting, amplifiers, heaters if required and anything else that might require electric. Another option however depends on just how much energy you require. If it isn’t a lot, for a microphone and small PA system for example, then as long as it reaches and certain safety precautions are taken, you could run an extension from the house. Of course, this depends on location and distance from the property. Our recommendation is a generator as they are more reliable and you won’t be worrying if anything is going to blow.

Marquee-Interior-ChesterWhat will my guests sit on? I don’t have that many chairs and tables!

Don’t worry, furniture hire is something that a good marquee hire company will be able to help you out with. At Skye Marquees we can provide everything from tables, chairs, chair covers, tablecloths, dance floors, lighting, in fact, pretty much anything you can imagine! You name it and we can get it to make your marquee as luxurious as you like. It is your event after all and we just want to help make it easy to arrange and perfect on the day.

Skye Marquees Top Tip for Marquee Hire

Hiring a marquee is a great alternative to spending lots of money on a venue where you may have to make certain compromises (such as space available, noise limiters etc.). Plus, you can pretty much place a marquee in any location that has enough space, which is an added bonus. One of the main concerns for customers who have come to us to hire a marquee for their party or wedding has been the dreaded UK weather. ‘Will a marquee be able to cope with rain? What about wind?’ Fear not! Most marquees can withstand pretty much all the weather conditions that the UK climate has to throw at them so you can rest assured that it will not put a dampener on your special day. However, whilst a lot of customers worry about the colder and wetter weather aspect, don’t forget that the sunshine can create problems too. So, always try to have a shady area for guests just in case we get one of those rare, beautiful sunny days.

Wedding Marquee at Peckforton, Cheshire

Skye Marquees

The middle of May this year saw the wedding of Alex & Sam on their family farm near Peckforton in Cheshire. After our initial consultation they decided to hire the now very popular Cruciform marquee. This special adaption kit allows us to build a T shaped marquee without the need for gutters or losing any height between marquees, creating a very unique and usable wedding venue. To add to this we put up a double pagoda with panoramic walls that housed a comfy sofa area just off the bar so people could put their feet up whilst others threw shapes on the dance floor. For lighting our friends at Event Equipment fitted a very fancy lighting rig which included their new Black LED dance floor set under our starlight sky linings and full disco lighting rig with mist machine.

A Spectacular Wedding Marquee in Cheshire

Beautiful Marquees

September saw the first outing of our new 15m wide marquee for the wedding of Nicola & Jon in Tattenhall, Cheshire. We managed to squeeze the wedding marquee into their garden, leaving around 1 cm to spare down one side! It was a very impressive layout with two entrance pagodas with comfy sofas, the main 15m marquee sit-down/entertainment marquee, a bar marquee and a walk through going through into the field to the catering and cloakroom.

The clear gable in the main marquee really gave it an open feeling with extra height and light.

The Tower Wedding Marquee in Mold

the-tower-marquee

June saw the wedding of the lovely Rob & Katy from Mold, Flintshire at The Tower, which is a Grade 1 listed Welsh fortified border house. We used our custom made adaption kit that reduces a marquee from 12m to 9m on the gable end without the need for gutters, whilst still retaining as much height as possible inside.

This was one of our most elaborate weddings of the year incorporating a full lighting rig, bar area with comfy sofas and even a UV canon above the dance floor.

It was quite the wedding and with the house and drive lit by our friends at Event Equipment it looked spectacular, even if we do say so ourselves. Mold and Flintshire didn’t know what had hit it with this wedding!

A Denbigh Wedding Marquee

Marquee Gallery

The bank holiday weekend in May saw us putting up a beautiful wedding marquee in the walled grounds of The Castle House B&B in Denbigh.

The access was very tight with all of our 7.5 tons of equipment having to be carried through a house sized doorway into the walled garden. The weather was not kind to us either during the erection of the marquee – with heavy rain, wind and hail it made for an interesting build.

On the day however the weather could not have been better – with the sun blazing and a light breeze it was perfect for a North Wales wedding! The Castle House has some of the most amazing views and is a fantastic venue for a wedding.

The wedding itself went without a hitch and we have had some excellent feed back from the happy couple. You can see for yourself below what a lovely venue the walls made.

A Secret Garden Wirral Marquee Wedding

At the end of April we had the pleasure of providing a wonderful wedding marquee in Barnston Village, the Wirral. It was in their hidden garden around the back of the house, which required walking all the equipment around the house and into the garden –  all 6 tons of marquee and flooring! This was very good fitness work for all involved.

The marquee was given a country theme with moss green roof overlays and hessian table clothes on straight tables. The finishing touches provided by the bride, groom and families really finished off the marquee, especially the candles which were placed in the garden walls along the path.

A good time was had by all and we wish the happy couple all the best in their future life together.

A Skye Marquees Wedding in North Wales

Wedding Marquees

On the 18th of September 2010, Robert Thomas the MD of Skye Marquees married his now wife Helen Amor with a beautiful marquee reception.

We went all out and erected a wonderful wedding marquee in front of an old oak wood on the Thomas’s family farm in Cilcain, North Wales. We kept the interior of the marquee very country with a modern twist using clear gables for extra light and a blacked out dance area with starlight sky, all hidden behind a reveil curtain during the wedding breakfast. Catherine Skates of CS Catering provided a wonderful dinner which was enjoyed by all.

‘Time for Tea’ Wedding in Llanarmon-yn-yal, Denbighshire

Skye Marquees Panorama

Gethin and Claire wanted a traditional country marquee wedding with a tea time theme in Llanarmon-yn-yal, Denbighshire. We decided to keep the colours in the marquee very light and natural with a cream carpet, Ivory linings and natural wood chairs. The Bunting Queen was then brought in and did a wonderful job adding bunting to the interior design. The Tea Time theme worked wonderfully inside their wedding marquee as can be seen from the pictures in our gallery.

It was a joy and honour to be involved in Claire and Gethin’s wedding and we thank them for choosing us as there preferred and trusted marquee supplier.

“Dear Rob, Just a little note to thank you so much for providing a truly magnificent marquee for Claire and Gethin's wedding. It all came together with their ‘Afternoon Tea’ theme and they certainly had the wedding of their dreams. It was great meeting with you and Helen. You really went out of your way to help with all the additional necessities and we really appreciate it. Thank you.”

Wedding in Rowen, Snowdonia, North Wales

About Skye Marquees

We recently erected a small wedding marquee for an intimate wedding in Rowen, North Wales in the Snowdonia National Park. It was a beautiful setting for a marquee as the views were stunning. The weather just held out for the wedding itself and the guests commented on what a lovely and personal wedding hiring a marquee can make.

We wish Pip and Alistair all the best in their future together.

“Thank you so much for all your support in making our wedding day such a special time. The marquee was perfect and everybody said how beautiful they thought it was! We were both thrilled. God bless & thanks once again.”
